As Sr. Electrical Engineer, Electric Motor Controls at Carbon Robotics, you will lead the design of high-power motor control systems for our diesel-electric platform. You'll architect traction motor drives, and optimize power management between the diesel generator and electric drive motors. From developing robust control algorithms to field testing on working farms, you'll do whatever it takes - which might include going to the farm - to ensure our customers have reliable and safe products.

What you'll do:

  • Collaborate with our Mechanical Powertrain engineers to define and select core off the shelf and semi-custom components including diesel engine, generator, ECUs, start/standby batteries, and more for our upcoming projects.
  • Design high-power motor control systems for traction drives, linear actuation, and other industrial motion needs.
  • Develop control strategies for power management between diesel generator and multiple motor loads
  • Design/integrate inverters and motor controllers capable of handling 100+ kW traction motors
  • Create torque vectoring and traction control algorithms for optimal field performance
  • Integrate motor control systems with vehicle CAN bus networks and tractor control units
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers on the development of thermal management systems for high-power motor drives operating in harsh agricultural environments
  • Validate motor control performance under real farming conditions including heavy loads and variable terrain
  • Produce high quality documentation to be used in a multidisciplinary engineering setting
  • Travel to the field to test, validate, and support agriculture equipment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Success:

  • 5-15 years experience with high-power motor control systems (50kW+) in automotive or heavy equipment
  • High proficiency in CAD, wiring, and PCB layout tools.
  • Expertise in traction motor control, regenerative braking, and hybrid powertrain systems
  • Experience with high-voltage DC systems (400-800V) and associated safety protocols
  • Proficiency in automotive communication protocols (CAN, J1939) and vehicle integration
  • Strong background in power electronics for high-current motor drives and thermal management
  • Experience with diesel-electric or hybrid vehicle architectures and power flow optimization
  • Knowledge of automotive/agricultural durability requirements and validation testing procedures
  • Desired to have a functional safety standards (ISO 26262, ISO 25119) for agricultural vehicles
  • Highly desired to have past experience as a Responsible Engineer or IPT lead.
  • Willingness to travel ~10% of the time to support products in the production & field environments with a demonstrated ability to work directly with internal and external stakeholders/customers
